Tirana is the capital and largest city of Albania. It became Albania's capital city in 1920. The population at the 2011 census was 418,495. The city is host to many public institutions and public and private universities, and is the centre of the political, economic, and cultural life of the country.
The European countries of Antante, such as England, France and Italy, did not support the Albanian people because they had reached an agreement during the World War 1 to conquer the countries of the triple alliance by promising Albanian territories to the neighbouring countries of Albania. The Protocol of April 1915 was devastating for Albania.

The inhabitants of Tirana and its surroundings took part in an uprising led by Haxhi Qamili in 1914. On February 8th, 1920, the provisional government formed at the Congress of Lushje moved to Tirana, and at this point Tirana became the capital of the country. This played an important role for the development of the town.
